Biography
Prof Phumzile Hlongwa received her Bachelor of Oral Hygiene (Cum Laude) (1986) and Bachelor of Dental Surgery (1993) from the Medical University of Southern Africa (MEDUNSA). She completed Master of Dentistry (Orthodontic) (2002). She has worked as an Oral Hygienist in Soweto (1987-1988); practiced as a General Dental Practitioner in Ga-Rankuwa, North-West of Pretoria (1993 – 1998); completed postgraduate orthodontic training (1998-2002). She is currently an Associate Professor at the University of the Witwatersrand, School of Oral Health Sciences and maintains a limited Orthodontic Private Practice in Pretoria. She is a member of the South African Dental Association (SADA), the South African Society of Orthodontists (SASO), World Federation of Orthodontics (WFO) and the Paedodontics Society of South African. For her academic excellence she received numerous awards including the Chancellor’s award for the best student in course lasting three to four years, Dean’s award for outstanding achievements and the Myriam Babangida award for the best female postgraduate student based on an outstanding community research project. She is actively involved in research and has presented papers in orthodontics, both in locally and international conferences. She has a number of published research papers and continues to be involved in research; postgraduate teaching; reviewer of journal research papers and member of editorial boards of some dental journals.
